Dixons Retail and Carphone Warehouse complete their merger

Dixons Carphone plc starts trading

Dixons Retail and Carphone Warehouse have confirmed the completion of their merger, which was first announced in May.

Carphone Warehouse co-founder Sir Charles Dunstone will be company chairman, with former Dixons CEO Sebastian James becoming Group Chief Executive and former Carphone Group Chief Exec Andrew Harrison now Deputy Group Chief Executive. Katie Bickerstaffe remains as UK/Ireland CEO of the Dixons business and Graham Stapleton is still UK/Ireland CEO for Carphone Warehouse.

Sebastian James, Group Chief Executive of the new company, said “Today is a big day: our shares officially start trading on the stock exchange and we are off to a flying start with the opening of our first seven combined shops. Customers using Currys, PC World and Carphone Warehouse websites will be guided to the right place to buy from the whole range that we have to offer together – from a toaster to the latest smartphone. Our offices now proudly show our new combined identity and up and down the country we are delivering a clear message to our teams and to our customers: We are one.”

“We’re creating an organisation for the future where the products are just the beginning. We will not only help customers to access the technology and the connectivity that is right for them, but also find the expertise and services that bring them to life - the first and best company to offer this complete end-to-end proposition.”

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
