GSMA announces Global Mobile Awards nominees for 2011

The GSMA has announced the nominees for the 16th Annual Global Mobile Awards. The winners will be announced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 15th February 2011. In total, 115 companies have been nominated in ten categories.

The awards categories include a series of new ‘Global Mobile App Awards’ joining the regular high-profile categories of ‘Best Mobile Device’ and ‘Device Manufacturer of the Year’. Jonathan Ross will be presenting all the awards.

Michael O'Hara, chief marketing officer at the GSMA, said “The GSMA warmly congratulates all the nominees in this year's Global Mobile Awards. Our judging panel once again faced a daunting challenge in determining the nominees this year, selecting just 115 nominees across 10 categories from more than 470 entries. To have been shortlisted in such a highly competitive and innovative field is a tremendous achievement and we look forward to recognising the winners and celebrating their success at Mobile World Congress next month.”

In the running for Best Mobile Device are the Apple iPhone 4, the HTC Desire, the LG Optimus 7, the BlackBerry Torch 9800 and the Samsung Galaxy S. Apple, HTC and Samsung are the three nominees for Device Manufacturer of the Year.

We'll be reporting from Barcelona throughout Mobile World Congress. Make sure you catch all of our special broadcasts by using our RSS feed or downloading the podcasts via iTunes.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
