Panasonic, Samsung, Sandisk, Sony and Toshiba collaborate on a secure memory solution

Panasonic, Samsung Electronics, SanDisk, Sony and Toshiba have agreed to work together on a new content protection technology for memory cards and storage devices. It’s currently called the Next Generation Secure Memory Initiative (although this name may change later) and is designed to protect High Definition content with Digital Rights Management when it’s shared between devices such as tablets and smartphones.

For example, HD video could be copied securely from a Blu-ray disc and watched on an Android tablet.

The five companies believe that they could start licensing the new secure memory technology early next year, with flash memory products and embedded memory solutions starting to use the technology later in 2012.

Hiroshi Yoshioka, Corporate Executive Officer and Executive Deputy President at Sony Corporation, said “We believe the secure solution created by this initiative will enable customers to enjoy high quality experiences anytime, anywhere. Sony has always been focused on bringing amazing experiences to people through highly-advanced technologies in content creation, content distribution and picture display.”

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Making mobile websites work better

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
