Apple customers spent almost half a billion dollars (around £330 million) on mobile applications and in-app purchases during the first week of this year: a new record for the company.
New Year’s Day 2015 was the single biggest day for sales in App Store history.
Last year, Apple App Store billings rose by 50%, with apps generating over $10 billion (£6.6 billion) for developers. In total, Apple App Store developers have earned $25 billion from app and game sales since the App Store launched in 2008.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said “This year is off to a tremendous start after a record-breaking year for the App Store and our developer community. We're so proud of the creativity and innovation developers bring to the apps they create for iOS users and that the developer community has now earned over $25 billion.”
There are currently more than 1.4 million apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices in the Apple App Store.
