CreditCall and Elavon introduce a mobile payment solution for UK businesses

Payment services business CreditCall, which announced its UK mobile payment plans at the end of 2011, has just launched its service to business owners. It’s been running a trial scheme in partnership with payment processor Elavon since January.

The Elavon MobileMerchant chip-and-PIN card reader is available with CreditCall’s CardEase Mobile technology, offering a payment device that connects via Bluetooth with Android or BlackBerrydevices.

Elavon MobileMerchant uses an EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) certified PIN pad and is compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). It links to an app on the merchant’s phone, although no sensitive card data is stored on the app, the card reader or the smartphone. The solution provides support for Chip and PIN cards, magnetic stripe cards and ‘card not present’ transactions.

Guy Harris, Managing Director of Elavon’s European operations, said “This solution is perfect for the thousands of very small, often mobile, businesses in the UK today. Such businesses have previously not been able to accept card payments easily or cost effectively. Not only does our solution enable mobile commerce but it has in-built EMV Chip and PIN security, so small business owners and their customers are fully protected.”

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Making mobile websites work better

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
