Syniverse sells part of MACH mobile roaming business to Starhome

Mobile roaming, messaging and networking Syniverse is selling part of MACH to complete its takeover process. Syniverse has been given the go-ahead to acquire its rival but the European Commission insisted that most of MACH’s data clearing and near real-time roaming data exchange business in the European Economic Area was sold to another buyer.

As a result, Syniverse has agreed to sell these assets to roaming provider Starhome. MACH will continue to run as a separate business for the rest of 2013, although Starhome says a ‘mutual roadmap’ will be developed for 2014.

Commercial terms haven’t been revealed.

Tal Meirzon, CEO of Starhome, said “Acquiring the MACH divestment business is a strategic growth step for Starhome. This move will enable us to grow in new directions and to better assist our customers with their multi-network challenges and competitive strategies. We plan to leverage the synergies between Starhome’s network solutions and footprint of over 200 mobile network operators worldwide with MACH’s IT services and technologies to create an end-to-end solutions and services portfolio, while bringing enhanced value to our customer base. We are very excited about the MACH management and employees who will be joining Starhome and enriching our extensive business coverage and innovation. We are fully committed to the high-quality service continuity and expansion of the data clearing and NRTRDE services for MACH’s 76 divested business customers, as well as for MACH customers in other regions who wish to remain with the excellent MACH platform and services. With Starhome’s global reach, our new MACH business will operate in all regions.”

We spoke to Guy Reiffer of MACH about generating revenue from roaming services and applications at Mobile World Congress last year. You can listen to the interview (which starts at 21:40) via the built-in audio player or by downloading the MP3 file.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
