UK appears split in 'landline versus mobile' debate

Research from Burnside Telecom has found that just over half of UK consumers (52%) would happily ditch their landline and go completely mobile, with 47% unwilling to give up their fixed-line phones.

The majority of people who wanted to keep their landlines were aged 65 and above; 73% of people wanting to keep fixed-line phones were in this age group.

Top priority for landline lovers was the assurance that the phone wouldn’t run out of battery power, followed by signal strength.

Colin Aitken, Chief Executive at Burnside Telecom, said “This research emphasizes the continuing pace of evolution and increasing move away from copper and fixed line communications to mobile networks. Burnside Telecom is committed to a range of product and service development to delivery new solutions in numerous sectors including retail, telecare, construction, marine and transport environments.”

Burnside Telecom, which produces conventionally-styled desktop phones and terminals with mobile connectivity, also found that 20% of UK consumers wanted the portability of a mobile phone in a desktop phone form.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
