Mercedes-Benz introduces QR codes that could save lives after car accidents

Mercedes-Benz says it’ll be adding a QR code to its vehicles, making it easier for the emergency services to help injured occupants. The barcode, which can be read by most smartphones and tablets, will provide a ‘rescue map’ that shows important information about the specific vehicle.

For example, fire-fighters, police and paramedics will be able to see where best to cut into a vehicle, where the battery and fuel tank are and where electric cables run.

ADAC, the largest automobile association in Germany, has successfully campaigned for German car manufacturers to provide ‘rescue sheets’ for their vehicles. However, this information can’t always be found in a vehicle - and in some cases a damaged car isn’t easy to identify. The new Mercedes-Benz QR code will make it easier for the emergency services to deal with road accidents.

All new vehicles from Mercedes-Benz will be provided with two QR code stickers from this year. The company recommends that one is placed on the fuel tank flap and the other on the B-pillar on the opposite side of the vehicle. It’s encouraging other manufacturers to do the same.
