LG announces KizON, a wearable mobile phone for children

LG Electronics has announced a new child-friendly mobile phone that’ll be available in South Korea from tomorrow, with a launch in North America and Europe planned for later this year. The LG KizON is worn on a wrist band, allowing parents of pre-school and primary school children to track and call their offspring.

Parents can take advantage of GPS and WiFi in the KizON device to track their child via an Android app, while 2G and 3G connectivity lets the KizON receive calls from pre-configured numbers. Children can call a pre-programmed number from the device.

Dr Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said “Children as well as the elderly are ideal customers for wearable technologies. Wearables allow us to stay connected without the worry of losing a device or the inconvenience of having to carry a large item in a pocket. At LG, we’re committed to exploring more ways to incorporate wearable devices into consumers lives in line with our vision to become a leader in wearables.”

LG’s KizON will be a rival to the FiLIP watch, which won the award for best mobile-enabled consumer electronics device at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. FiLIP is currently being offered by AT&T in the USA.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Making mobile websites work better

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
