Five new devices announced by Samsung

Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G revealed

Samsung Electronics has revealed five new devices during a live-streamed 'Galaxy Unpacked' virtual event.

These include the Samsung Galaxy Note20 phablet (including an 'Ultra 5G' version), a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 smartwatch, Samsung Galaxy Buds Live earbuds and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 foldable smartphone.

The Galaxy Note20 series continues to feature the company's S Pen stylus. Pricing is expected to be from £849 SIM-free for the standard Note20, with its 6.7-inch FHD+ screen, and from £1,179 for the 5G version with a 6.9-inch WQHD+ screen that delivers a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

Although it continues to run Android, a partnership with Microsoft promises greater integration with Windows 10 computers, productivity software and the Xbox gaming system.

The Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+ are 11-inch and 12.4-inch devices respectively, with 5G connectivity available on the S7+ version. Prices start from £619; both are supplied with an S Pen.

Samsung's Galaxy Watch3 smartwatch (from £399 for 41mm face, £419 for 45mm) includes a new SOS feature if the wearer suffers a hard fall when walking or running.

An update to Samsung's previous folding smartphones has created the Galaxy Z Fold2, which has a 6.2-inch 'cover screen' and a 7.6-inch main screen.

Availability for all except the folding phone is expected from 21st August, with pre-ordering online from 5th August.

Conor Pierce, Samsung's Corporate Vice President UK & Ireland, said "Technology has played a vital role in keeping us connected during these unprecedented times. Now more than ever, our customers are looking for products that deliver against this and work seamlessly together. Whether it's through work or play, the ecosystem we have launched today is designed to help you get the most out of life. With our Note20 range and Tab S7+ now powered by 5G, we are not only super-charging the connected experience, but also strengthening Samsung’s 5G leadership in the UK. We can't wait to hear our customers' feedback."

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
