Nokia suspends Lumia 2520 tablet sales and advises customers not to use mains charger

Nokia has advised UK customers with a Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet NOT to use the AC-300 mains charger or optional travel charger any more. It says it’s possible for the plastic cover of the plug to become loose, which could expose live wires inside.

The product advisory notice applies to the European and UK variant of the AC-300 charger, which was supplied with the Lumia 2520 tablet in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and the UK. The Lumia 2520 travel charger accessory was sold in those countries and also in the USA.

No other chargers or products are affected. Around 30,000 chargers are thought to be affected by this warning.

Jo Harlow, Executive Vice President for Smart Devices at Nokia, said “While there have been no confirmed consumer incidents related to this potential quality issue, product quality and safety are top priorities at Nokia. We apologize to the owners of the Lumia 2520, and we are working with urgency to minimize the inconvenience.”

Sales of the Lumia 2520 tablet and the travel charger accessories in affected countries have been delayed until the problem is resolved.

However, the company hasn’t yet put a replacement plan in operation and is currently asking customers to contact it or keep checking the product advisory web page.

Nokia’s Lumia 2520 went on sale in December last year. It’s a 10.1-inch tablet running Windows RT 8.1

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
