HP says Autonomy deal was spiced up

Mark Bridge writes:

It’s time to ‘ketchup’ with last week’s biggest mobile industry news stories - and where better to start than with HP’s claims of ‘saucy’ behaviour?  It’s launched an investigation into last year’s acquisition of UK company Autonomy, claiming the software company had ‘spiced up’ its valuation. Condiment-based puns aside, it’s a serious matter that could see key players from the deal charged with cooking the books.

Fortunately, there’s been some good news around as well. For example, new UK virtual network The People's Operator is trying to make the world a better place by promising to give 25% of its profits to charity. EE and Vodafone are joining Virgin Media in offering their customers free WiFi access on the London Underground. Orange introduced an all-in-one cross-network app with free voice calls, messaging and voicemail. And Ofcom is getting closer to allowing ‘white space’ mobile devices into unused UK radio spectrum.

We also saw assorted research reports about spam SMS messages, about mobile app revenue, about NFC uptake, about data traffic growth, about roaming usage and about WiFi offloading.

Finally, thanks to Thanksgiving, we’re even able to predict some of this week’s news stories. For as surely as Boxing Day bargains follow Christmas, Thanksgiving Day in the USA precedes Black Friday and Cyber Monday. As a result we’re expecting to hear from various companies about the volume of online shopping and mobile purchases for the rest of the month.

Naturally, we’ll be reporting any tasty morsels.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Making mobile websites work better

Making mobile websites work better

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
