Three-quarters of UK small businesses are considering flexible working for 2011

Orange UK is the latest organisation to publish predictions for 2011. In this case it’s asked over two thousand of its small and medium business customers what they’re expecting to do next year.

Three-quarters (74%) of SMEs are considering or already plan to introduce flexible working options in 2011, driven by a need to improve staff efficiency. In addition, 52% plan to spend more on information technology than they did in 2010, with communications equipment at the top of the list. Social media, business applications and mobile WiFi were all listed by SMEs as the tools needed to further their businesses.

Overall, 76% predicted a year that would – at the very least – be no worse than this year… and  over a quarter (26%) expected to hire more staff in 2011 than they did in 2010.

Martin Lyne, SME Marketing Director for Everything Everywhere, said “These results provide an interesting snapshot into SMEs’ plans for 2011, and it’s great to see that businesses are positive about next year. What is also encouraging is the overwhelming number of companies that plan to introduce flexible working. It demonstrates a strong desire to drive a more efficient business, and is also a great way to help employees strike the right work/life balance.”

Next week’s edition of The Fonecast will be offering an exclusive perspective into mobile retailing and mobile recruitment for 2011 with contributions from Faisal Sheikh and Spencer Davies… and the following week we’ll have our own predictions for 2011. Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
