iZettle launches its mobile payment service in the UK

iZettleiZettle, which offers a plug-in card reader that can turn an iPhone or iPad into a credit card terminal, has launched a beta programme in the UK. It follows launches in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway within the past nine months.

UK users who want to accept MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club 'chip' cards can can sign up via iZettle’s UK website or can download the iOS app from the Apple App Store and request an invitation. The company currently has 3000 mini chip-card readers to give away to UK businesses and individuals.

Charles Dunstone, who founded The Carphone Warehouse and is an iZettle investor, said “I know what it is like to start your own business - you need all the help you can get and iZettle is one of those small but important elements that can define the difference between failure and success. Taking payments is becoming increasingly difficult with people carrying less and less cash in their wallets. With iZettle - problem solved - you can focus on growing your business.”

There’s no set up fee, monthly fee or minimum payment with iZettle. Business owners simply pay a percentage of each sale to iZettle, which automatically deposits the balance of each payment in the seller’s bank account.

iZettle is EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) approved and is compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS).

We spoke to iZettle CEO Jacob de Geer at Mobile World Congress in February. You can listen to the interview (which starts after around 12 minutes) via the built-in audio player on our website or by downloading the MP3 file.

I will wait and see if this is going to be successful. In the meantime, I will also wait for mPOwa (www.mpowa.com).

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
