iZettle, which offers a service that can turn smartphones and tablets into credit card terminals, has partnered with Eurostar. The high-speed train service is now using iZettle devices to accept payments from passengers who want to upgrade after they’ve started their journey.
By combining a mobile app with a ‘Chip & PIN’ reader that connects via Bluetooth, iZettle helps a wide range of customers take payments from Visa, MasterCard and American Express cards.
James Blackwood, General Manager for Eurostar On-Board Services, said “At Eurostar we believe that our passengers’ journeys should be seamless, from the start of the booking process right through to arrival at their destination. iZettle gives us the flexibility to offer hassle-free upgrades to passengers once on-board. Using iZettle’s Chip & PIN reader we can process upgrade sales more quickly, reducing the number of sales lost using slower, more traditional methods of payment collection. This has helped streamline our on-board upgrade process making the task less complicated for our on-board teams whilst at the same time increasing customer satisfaction.”
Eurostar processed over £300,000 worth of upgrade sales through on-board transactions last year.
We spoke to iZettle CEO Jacob de Geer at Mobile World Congress last year, just before the company launched its service in the UK. You can listen to the interview (which starts after around 12 minutes) via the built-in audio player below or by downloading the MP3 file.
