New Vodafone UK tariffs offer unlimited voice and text messages

Vodafone UK has launched a new set of ‘pay monthly’ tariffs called Vodafone Red, which offer unlimited voice calls and unlimited text messaging. There are also larger mobile data allowances than previous tariffs.

Customers can benefit from unlimited UK calls and texts plus 1GB of internet usage from £29 per month with the standard Red tariff. Alternatively, Red Data from £34 per month includes 2GB of data with unlimited calls and SMS text messaging. Both deals have a 24-month minimum term, with monthly costs varying depending on the chosen mobile phone.

Businesses can choose Red Business from £34.17+VAT monthly, which includes the Vodafone One Net Express service with a virtual landline number and call forwarding.

Guy Laurence, Vodafone UK Chief Executive, said “People want to talk for as long as they like to whoever they want, whenever they want, without having to think about things like how many minutes they are using or what’s left in their call bundles. That’s why we are calling time on call charges. We are offering unlimited calls on all the handsets that we sell, making it simple for customers to choose what they want and easy to understand what they are getting. They can just take out their phone and call without any worries.”

The Vodafone Red consumer plans include unlimited calls to UK mobiles on any network and to standard landlines plus unlimited standard UK texts. They also allow customers to use VoIP services and ‘tethering’ to share mobile data with other devices.

Reports about mobile phone calls cause an increase in blood pressure

Mark Bridge writes:

I was on the radio for a few minutes this morning. Nick Ferrari on LBC 97.3 FM was talking to me about a recent survey that noted a rise in blood pressure when people received calls on their mobile phones. As I waited to go on-air, a producer asked me what I thought. “Storm in a teacup”, I said. Well, it seemed better than “Makes my blood boil”.

Device keeps internet on when power goes off

Michael Scaturro of voanews.com writes:

A team of Americans and Kenyans has developed a new Internet router - and it's creating buzz. That's because it is an affordable, reliable solution for people without consistent Internet access. It can run while plugged in or on battery power, jump between networks at will, and become a mobile hotspot for multiple devices. The team presented the device - called the Brck [pronounced Brick] - at the Re:publica tech conference in Berlin.

The rise of the machines

Mark Bridge writes:

Nokia has had a busy few days. First came the Asha 501, a ‘smartphone lite’ that introduced developers to a new version of the company’s Asha platform. This was followed by the Lumia 928, which is a Windows Phone 8 handset exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the USA. It’s quite like the Nokia 920, so we’re not missing out too much.
