Tesco launches own-brand Android tablet

Tesco has launched a 7-inch WiFi-only Android tablet that it’s calling Hudl. It’ll go on sale next Monday (30th September) for £119 online and in the majority of Tesco supermarkets.

Hudl runs Android 4.2.2 on a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. The HD screen has a 1440 x 900 pixel resolution, there’s 16GB of expandable memory and there are front-facing and rear-facing cameras.

A dedicated Tesco button offers access to digital services from the retailer, including online shopping, blinkbox film rentals and a special video channel for customers.

Produced in China exclusively for Tesco, Hudl will be offered in black, blue, red and purple colour options.

Philip Clarke, Tesco’s Chief Executive, said “Hudl is a colourful, accessible tablet for the whole family to enjoy. The first stage in our tablet offering, it’s convenient, integrated and easy to use with no compromise on spec. Customers are quite rightly very discerning about the technology they buy so we knew we had to be competitive on all fronts. “Being online is an increasingly essential part of family life and whilst tablets are on the rise, usage is still quite limited. We feel the time is right for Tesco to help widen tablet ownership and bring the fun, convenience and excitement of tablets to even more customers across the UK. The digital revolution should be for the many, not for the few.”

Another impressive tablet to launch this month is from Ramos Technology-- which has partnered with Intel to introduce the i-Series of Android tablets that use one of Intel's newest mid range processors and a much better deal is the new Ramos i-8 £125($199)-- which is the world’s thinnest 8" tablet -- with a 7.9 inch HD screen and aluminum nickel frame for a sleek design; and is packed with features that compare to the new Nexus 7.

The Ramos i-8 is similar in size to the mini iPad-- and almost as compact as a 7" tablet, but offers 40% more screen space, which is a significant difference and viewing tablet content is much easier and one of the reasons Apple made the i-pad mini this size...

T ab l e t Sp r i nt-- is one of the first sources to feature the new i-8 and the rest of the new Ramos i-Series...

Advertising gets truly personal with Pontis

Every mobile network customer can be offered an individually tailored deal

Mark Bridge writes:

Advertising is already personal. Browse online for certain products and services – perhaps a new camera, a car hire deal or a pair of jeans – and you’ll see the same items advertised when you visit other web sites.

Marketing technology company Pontis, based in the high-tech industrial zone of Ra'anana in central Israel, has a much more focussed perspective. It talks about a segment-of-one marketing approach… and it’s just started working with O2 in the UK.

Top ten gadgets for 2013

Mark Bridge writes:

I’ve recently been talking to Theo Neumann from Wolverhampton City Radio about the top ten gadgets that are likely to hit the headlines in 2013. The most desirable, most likely to be talked about, most exciting… that kind of thing. Although my top 10 list isn’t entirely mobile-related, I thought it was worth sharing here.

Are brands missing a trick with mobile?

Dave Katz writes:

It has been reported recently that consumer spend via mobile is on the increase this Christmas. Further confirmation has come from research indicating that 20% of the expected £4.6bn of total online shopping will be carried out using smartphones and tablets.

If consumers want to browse, research and purchase via mobile, then is it not something of a surprise that only 7% of adspend in the UK currently goes on mobile?
