PayPal inStore app offers high-street mobile payments without NFC

PayPal has revealed a new iOS and Android app that’ll let customers use their mobile devices to pay at high street shops in the UK. The inStore app will let customers pay via PayPal at participating retailers, even when there’s no mobile or WiFi signal. Aurora Fashions - the company responsible for Coast, Karen Millen, Oasis and Warehouse fashion stores - is the first retailer to take part.

The PayPal inStore app provides the customer with a unique barcode and number for each transaction. This is then scanned by the shop cashier, which enables the retailer to take payment from the customer’s PayPal account.

Security is provided by a PIN code; no personal or financial information is stored on her phone.

Cameron McLean, Managing Director of PayPal UK, said “Today marks the start of a quiet revolution in the way we shop on the high street. We've created a simple, secure way to use a mobile phone to pay in your favourite stores. The revolution starts today at Oasis, Warehouse, Karen Millen and Coast. The lines between the online world and high street will soon disappear altogether: research we carried out last year amongst major retailers suggested that 2016 will be the year you won’t need a wallet to shop on the British high street. A phone will be enough. Today's move also underlines our view that mobile payments don't need near field communication (NFC) technology to succeed. PayPal’s ‘pay by mobile’ service works with the phones most of our customers already own. And our retail partner doesn't have to install new systems to take in-store mobile payments.”

15 million people in the UK are currently registered with PayPal. The new PayPal service launches tomorrow and will be available in 230 stores.

Read about it and weep, John Donahoe ...

In addition to Visa’s V.me, there is now MasterCard’s PayPass digital wallet soon to arrive; another perfectly logical extension to the real banks’ traditional, professional, payment processing systems (and you don’t have to ditch the plastic) …

Goodbye clunky PreyPal, I can’t say that it has been nice knowing you …

Don't expect a positive answer from the Oracle

Mark Bridge writes:

Here in the UK, we have a double Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. That means two days away from work for many of us (and also two days of unseasonably bad weather, according to tradition).

In fact, the three of us at The Fonecast are celebrating our own anniversary this month. It’s been six years since we started podcasting about the mobile phone industry. We’ll be revisiting some of those early programmes - and the biggest mobile news headlines from 2006 - in this week’s podcast on Wednesday.

Motorola gets Google, HP gets frugal

Mark Bridge writes:

Just over a week ago Motorola Mobility lost a patent-related legal case against Microsoft in the USA. A couple of days later the company was formally acquired by Google – and a few days after that it lost a patent case against Microsoft in Germany. Business as usual, you might say.

A different kind of share for Facebook CEO

Mark Bridge writes:

What a week for Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Not content with transforming his company through its stock market flotation, he then went on to marry. What does this reveal?  Well, he’s clearly capable of multi-tasking and he’d rather wear a suit for social occasions than for work.

How mobile technology is keeping the BBC Olympic Torch coverage on the air

Mark Bridge writes:

A horse box and eight SIM cards. That’s the basic technology keeping the BBC’s Olympic Torch Relay broadcasts on the air and on the road.

The converted DAF horse box is being driven in front of the runners as they carry an Olympic torch along the relay route. It’s equipped with four cameras and a mixing desk, enabling a choice of views to be recorded and broadcast for 12 hours per day throughout the 70-day relay.
