Xiaomi ships more smartphones in Europe than any other manufacturer

New figures from market research company Strategy Analytics show that Xiaomi shipped more smartphones into Europe in the second quarter of 2021 than any other manufacturer. It achieved a 25.3% European market share, up 67% from the same quarter in 2020, reaching 12.7 million units.

Overall, European shipments were up 14% from the same quarter in 2020, reaching a total of 50 million units. Samsung’s share dropped 7% year-on-year, relegating it to second place with 12 million units. Third-placed Apple shipped 9.6 million devices, a 15.7% year-on-year increase.

According to Strategy Analytics, the market growth was driven by three significant factors: ongoing economic recovery, demand from consumers wanting to upgrade aging devices and attractively-priced 5G handsets.

Boris Metodiev, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, said “The European markets for smartphones had a strong quarter driven by Covid recovery, following the crash in 2020. The highlight of the quarter is Xiaomi emerging as the number one vendor in shipment terms for the first time. Xiaomi shipped almost 13 million units on the continent to displace longtime leader Samsung. Xiaomi has seen great success in Russia, Ukraine, Spain and Italy among others and found customers eager for its Mi and Redmi series of feature rich, value smartphones.”

Last week at The Fonecast: 19th December 2011

Mark Bridge writes:

“He knows if you’ve been bad or good...”

You don’t need to be Santa Claus to appreciate that RIM’s quarterly results have marked a disappointing end to a disappointing year. Yes, the company’s sold millions of BlackBerry phones - but PlayBook sales haven’t been good, its new OS is delayed and its market share appears to be falling. You could argue that 2012 is a make-or-break year for Research In Motion... or at least for its current management.

Mark Bridge writes:

It’s been an annus horribilis for Research In Motion. In fact, the BBC was already using that very phrase about the BlackBerry manufacturer two months ago.
