Retailers expected to spend £35 billion on mobile marketing in 2015

A new report from Juniper Research expects the amount of money spent on mobile marketing by retailers will reach $55 billion per year (£35 billion) by 2015, which is almost double the $28 billion spend expected this year.

It says that the adoption of tablet devices has created new opportunities for brands that want to increase their engagement with consumers. Advertising on tablets and smartphones is now showing strong growth, with retailers in North America and Western Europe moving their general ad spending towards online ads - and to mobile in particular. Mobile social networks such as Foursquare and Facebook are being adopted as well.

In addition, electronic coupons on mobile phones are being used by many shops to drive footfall. Other technologies including augmented reality and NFC are also being integrated into in-store retail strategies.

Yet, despite this enthusiasm for mobile technology in the retail environment, a significant number of retailers still haven’t optimised their sites for mobile devices.

Dr Windsor Holden, Research Director at Juniper Research and author of the report, said “If retailers truly want to maximise the mobile monetisation opportunity, then optimisation is critical. If you are using mobile advertising for consumer acquisition, you need to push users to a site with which they can comfortably interact; retailers that fail to respond to consumer demand will fall behind.”

There’s not much I can say that hasn’t already been said; it’s hard to argue with Tim Cook’s statement that “Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

India launches 'world's cheapest' tablet

India hopes that the launch of what is being called “the world’s cheapest tablet computer” will help tens of thousands of low-income students connect to the digital world.

The $45 device with a seven-inch color touchscreen, Wi-Fi connectivity, and two USB ports is meant to bridge the digital divide in a country where only three percent of the population has computers.

Mobile crime and mobile security at Over The Air

Much of Bletchley Park’s history involves code-breaking and intercepting radio messages so - when Over The Air 2011 brought hundreds of mobile developers to the site - it seemed appropriate to explore the subject of mobile phone security.

In particular, there were a couple of sessions on the agenda that caught my eye. Detective Sergeant Andy Williams of the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit started by talking about stolen phones... and asking if mobile applications could help with this problem.

Apple’s evangelists will need to wait a little longer for the iPhone 5, it seems. Last night’s announcement of the Apple iPhone 4S by Apple CEO Tim Cook seems to have disappointed many people, although plenty of others had predicted the arrival of this faster and smarter sibling for the iPhone 4.

But that wasn’t the only news from Apple.
