Juniper Research has calculated that revenue from mobile adult subscriptions will reach nearly $1 billion by 2015. Although some of the growth will result from the increasing number of smartphone and tablet users, an increase in the average spend per user is also expected.
Tablet use, which offers a higher-quality viewing experience, is expected to be particularly influential as the majority of tablets will be bought in regions that have tended to spend the most on adult subscriptions. Conversely, growth in emerging markets will be restricted by low smartphone adoption, a lack of viable payment methods and possibly also legal and social barriers.
Charlotte Miller, the author of the report, said “Mobile adult subscriptions will be a growing source of mobile adult revenues. Niche content has always been a driver of paid adult content and this is no less true on mobile. While there has been a proliferation of free content, it remains that case that for specialised content, users must continue to pay.”
Over 70% of mobile adult revenue from consumers is expected to come from North America and Western Europe.
