HTC launches a 'mini' version of its new HTC One M8

HTC has unveiled a new smartphone it’s calling the HTC One mini 2.

The phone, which follows the March release of the HTC One M8, has a 4.5-inch HD display, a 5 megapixel front-facing camera and a 13 megapixel rear camera. It runs Android v4.4 and the HTC Sense 6 UI on a 1.2GHz quad-core processor.

Availability is due from June.

Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, said “The latest member of the award-winning HTC One family distills the advanced features that have earned it global acclaim, into an elegant, compact handset. Its size and tapered edges fit perfectly in a hand, pocket or purse, making it look great and feel even better to use. It’s the perfect choice for those who love the iconic design of the HTC One (M8) yet want something more compact.”

From this autumn you'll be able to tweet from within the camera app, the web browser, the contact application and even YouTube on your iOS5 device.

Taiwan tech firms challenge iPad with locally designed products

Ralph Jennings of voanews.com writes:

Taiwan's massive high-tech industry has long been synonymous with building gadgets cheaply for foreign companies. But at the country's annual technology convention, locally designed tablet computers are hoping to change that image by challenging Apple's wildly popular iPad.

After decades of making PCs at a discount for more well-known foreign companies, Taiwan firms are using their manufacturing experience to design their own machines.

This week at The Fonecast: 4th June 2011

Mark Bridge writes:
