BT will have 500,000 WiFi hotspots in London for the Olympics

BTBT says it’s on track to have 500,000 WiFi hotspots working across London in time for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including exclusive WiFi service across the Olympic Park in East London. The figure is a combination of commercial-standard hotspots plus thousands of independent businesses and homes that have joined the BT FON community.

Nine Olympic venues including the Olympic Stadium, the Aquatics Centre, Velodrome and all public areas of the Olympic Park will be served by a new network of nearly 1,000 WiFi access points.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, said “This is fantastic news for the millions of visitors coming to the capital to enjoy this incredible summer of sport but even better news for London's businesses who will continue to reap the benefits of this boost to the city’s ever expanding digital infrastructure long after the Games are over.”

WiFi access from BT is free for the company’s broadband customers and can be bought online by other users. BT currently offers over four million hotspots across the UK.

Wireless backhaul interview with Gaby Junowicz of Siklu Communication

Mark Bridge writes:

Some parts of the mobile industry have more glamour than others. New handsets often attract celebrity endorsements, while behind-the-scenes technology rarely hits the mainstream headlines unless it goes wrong.

One of the areas most under pressure at the moment is 'backhaul'; essentially the connection between a cell site and the rest of the mobile network.

Yahoo! and Ovi, Nokia and Microsoft

Mark Bridge writes:

With all the excitement about the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft, it's easy to forget another partnership between a major online brand and the Finnish mobile giant.

Exactly a year ago, Yahoo! and Nokia announced a worldwide strategic alliance that would see Nokia providing Yahoo!'s maps and navigation services under the Ovi brand, while Yahoo! would power Nokia's Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services. The two companies would also work on sharing log-in details across Yahoo! and Ovi services.
