Rugged mobile phone manufacturer Sonim Technologies has launched a new device, the Sonim XP1300 Core, which it's describing as the world's first IP-68 rated GSM handset that's fully submersible in 2 metres of water. Previous devices, such as the Sonim XP3, were only rated to IP57.
The Sonim XP1300 Core mobile phone, due for release in November, is the latest in Sonim’s Xtreme Performance range. It's equipped with a 2-inch high-resolution, scratch-resistant screen, a noise-cancelling microphone and a large loudspeaker. Users benefit from a three-year warranty.
Bob Plaschke, CEO of Sonim Technologies, said "The XP1300 CORE, our first product built on our fourth generation rugged platform, raises the toughness stakes once again. It’ll be the number one choice for construction crews, farmers, dock workers and others in tough work environments".
IP – Ingress Protection – is an international classification system that indicates how effectively electrical equipment is protected by its casing. The first digit refers to 'foreign bodies' (e.g. dust), the second to moisture. IP68 is completely dust-tight and can be immersed in water beyond one metre deep.
