103 million smartphones were shipped in Q2 2011 according to ABI Research. That’s a 62% growth on the same period last year and a 2.2% increase on last quarter.
It notes that Nokia’s smartphone market share has fallen from 38% last year and 24% last quarter to 16% in Q2 2011, leaving it in third place when it comes to shipments.
Apple shipped 20.3 million iPhones in Q2 to become the top smartphone manufacturer (after only four years in the mobile phone business), followed by Samsung with an estimated 19 million smartphone shipments. Nokia’s 16.7 million devices puts it in third place.
RIM shipped 13.2 million BlackBerry smartphones, HTC shipped 11.5 million devices and Motorola shipped 4.4 million smartphones in Q2.
Michael Morgan, ABI Research Senior Analyst, said “Although Apple’s 142% year-on-year growth placed it as number one this quarter, Samsung’s 500% YoY growth shows that going forward, the top smartphone OEM position is Samsung’s to lose.”
Overall, ABI Research has calculated that 47 million Android smartphones were shipped in Q2, giving it a 46.4% share of smartphone shipments in Q2. Samsung was responsible for 34% of Q2’s Android shipments, HTC shipped 23% and Sony Ericsson acquired 11% Android market share.
Rival analyst company Strategy Analytics has a similar perspective, although it says global smartphone shipments were up 76% year-on-year to 110 million units in the second quarter of 2011.
