Mobile telecom author and commentator Tomi Ahonen has published a lengthy blog post covering smartphone segmentation: which people use smartphones… and why they use them.
In it, he anticipates around 35% growth in smartphone shipments this year (excluding Japan), with most growth coming from lower-priced handsets.
Headline figures include:
Around a quarter of all smartphones (24%) are chosen by businesses for their employees.
19% of consumer smartphones are picked by young people because of their text messaging features.
13% of consumer smartphones – 20 million worldwide - are sold to people who don't have a strong opinion about the device they're buying, perhaps because they're choosing it for a partner or child.
8% of consumer smartphones are chosen because of the applications they can run.
