UK regulator Ofcom has been talking about the proximity of the 800MHz 4G spectrum to the frequencies used for digital terrestrial television.
It’s concerned to ensure mobile services can be used effectively without restricting DTT broadcasting.
According to its calculations, up to three-quarters of a million digital TV customers could be affected by interference if new 800MHz mobile licences were awarded without any action taken to manage the interference risk.
As a result, it’s published a number of proposals in a consultation document. It says filters for digital TV equipment and changes to TV aerials may be needed, with most of the costs borne by the new licensees of the 800MHz spectrum.
The consultation period runs until 11th August 2011.
