Half of all Apple app downloads are games

App store analyst company Distimo and games market research firm Newzoo are working together to provide monthly data on game sales and downloads across the Apple App Store in various markets.

Their first report shows that half of all free and paid app downloads across the USA, UK, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium are games. In total, these seven countries saw more than five million game downloads per day. That’s an average of 2.5 games per month for 63 million people using Apple’s iOS on their iPhone, iPod, iPad or Mac.

The research shows that 6-7% of the online population has an iPhone in the US, UK, France and Germany, although figures are a lower 3-4% in Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium. Between half and three-quarters of iPhone owners play iOS games.

Around 88% of the top 300 downloaded iOS games are free.
