Report says damage to Samsung Galaxy SIII was caused by external source

Last month it was reported that a Samsung Galaxy SIII smartphone had emitted “a white flame, sparks and a bang”, according to an online report by a Dublin-based student.

An investigation by Fire Investigations UK has now concluded that the damage was caused by an external energy source, noting “the device was not responsible for the cause of the fire” and revealing that the moisture detection patch had been removed from the device.

The Samsung Tomorrow blog notes “the only way it was possible to produce damage similar to the damage recorded within the owner’s damaged device was to place the devices or component parts within a domestic microwave.”

In addition, the original owner has commented online that “the damage to the phone was caused by another person... this was not a deliberate act but a stupid mistake”.
