Google announces 'Android L': the next version of its mobile OS

Developers at the Google I/O conference last week were shown key aspects of the forthcoming Android OS update. Known simply as ‘Android L’ - a sweet-themed name is expected to follow - the new platform is due to be launched in the autumn.

Most of the major changes in the new Android L Developer Preview affect the appearance of Android, including the introduction of round rather than square app icons. It will also support 64-bit processors. Google is describing its new design theme - which will be available on desktop and mobile devices - as ‘material design’.

The Android L preview is now available for developers to download, with the full release expected in the next few months.
