Summer smartphone sales give the European mobile market a welcome boost

The mobile phone market in Western Europe grew just 1.5% year-on-year to 43.3 million units in the second quarter of 2010, with smartphone growth offsetting a fall in the sale of traditional handsets. International Data Corporation's Mobile Phone Tracker says smartphone shipments were up 60% on Q2 2009 to 14.6 million units, while traditional phone sales fell 14% to 28.7 million units. That means 34% of all devices shipped were smartphones, up from 28% in the previous quarter.

Apple changes its App Store terms and publishes its guidelines

Apple's relaxing some of the restrictions it had put in place for iOS developers – and it's also published its App Store Review Guidelines for the first time.

Earlier this year, Apple's rules had prevented iPhone developers from writing code using third-party software.

Apple updates iPod touch to reflect iPhone features - and iTunes gets social

Tonight's big Apple announcement was, as expected, focussed on the music rather than the mobile side of the business.

The company has introduced a new iPod touch music player with many of the features that were first introduced on the iPhone 4, including a 'Retina Display', Apple's A4 chip, FaceTime video calling over WiFi (with front-facing camera and microphone), 3-axis gyroscope and HD video recording.
