Research In Motion warns of job cuts and delays to BlackBerry 10 platform

Research In Motion has published quarterly results for the first three months of its current financial year, which ended on 2nd June. It shipped 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones and 260,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in the quarter.

Revenue was $2.8 billion (£1.8 billion), down 33% from the previous quarter and down 43% from the same quarter in 2012. The company reported a net quarterly loss of $518 million.

Apple and Samsung now account for 55% of the global smartphone market

ABI Research says 90% of smartphone profits are claimed by the two companies

Figures from ABI Research show that smartphone shipments grew 41% year-on-year to 144.6 million during the first quarter of 2012. However, this market is now dominated by two companies: Samsung and Apple accounted for 55% of global smartphone shipments in Q1 2012 and over 90% of the market’s profits.

The report notes that Nokia’s smartphone shipments fell by 40% from the previous quarter, which means it could soon be overtaken by RIM despite BlackBerry shipments also declining sequentially.

RIM warns of quarterly loss and job cuts for BlackBerry workers

BlackBerryResearch In Motion has published a business update from CEO Thorsten Heins.

It warns that its quarterly results, due on 28th June, are likely to shown an operating loss due to the company’s ongoing transformation and the competitive business environment.

European mobile phone market starts growing again

IDC research shows growth after 9 months of decline

The mobile phone market in Western Europe has started growing again, according to new figures from the International Data Corporation.

Its European Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker shows a 1.3% year-on-year increase in shipments to 44.8 million units following three consecutive quarters of decline.
