Ofcom gives the go-ahead to faster broadband speeds on trains, coaches, ships and aircraft

UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has agreed to make radio spectrum available for transport operators to offer faster broadband connections to passengers on aircraft, boats, railway trains and coaches.

Each vehicle could receive a data connection of around 50Mbit/sec, providing more than 10Mbps via WiFi to an individual passenger.

GSMA is working with the Alliance for Affordable Internet to drive down the cost of getting online

The GSMA has become a member of the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), which is committed to reducing the cost of internet access in developing countries.

It means the mobile network trade association will work with A4AI to identify and address policy and regulatory barriers to internet access.

More than half of all 4G data is being consumed by 0.1% of users

0.1% of the world’s 4G users consumed more than half of all LTE downlink data in 2013, according to a new report. That makes these ‘extreme’ 4G users 10 times more data hungry than 3G customers, where 1% of users consume half of all 3G downlink data.

The figures come from the JDSU Location Intelligence Business Unit, which was known as Arieso until its acquisition last year.

Almost half of all roaming revenue is expected to come from data by 2018

Operator revenue from mobile data roaming is expected to reach $42 billion (£25.5 billion) by 2018, according to a new report from Juniper Research. That means data will generate 47% of all mobile roaming revenue, compared to an estimated 36% last year.

This increase will be driven by increasing data usage, helped by customers moving to 4G and enjoying faster connections.
