Expect Windows 8 on tablets, laptops and desk PCs

Microsoft has been showing off the next version of Windows at the Computex technology show in Taiwan. It's codenamed 'Windows 8' and will be designed for touch-centred devices, including tablets, as well as conventional PCs.

The new operating system will work on x86 and ARM-based processors.

New ZTE smartphone with Qualcomm chip works with GLONASS and GPS location services

Qualcomm has announced that its Snapdragon MSM7x30 chipset can now support the Russian GLONASS satellite system and the US GPS location service simultaneously. The first phone with GLONASS and GPS support will be the MTS 945 from ZTE.

Working with both satellite networks offers more accurate location information and also has a potential commercial benefit.

Qualcomm quarterly results show revenue up 46 per cent

Qualcomm Incorporated has announced its quarterly results for the three-month period until 27th March 2011.

Revenue was $3.88 billion (£2.34 billion), up 46% year-on-year and up 16% on the previous quarter.

Qualcomm and Gameloft agree to work together on HD mobile games

Qualcomm and Gameloft have signed an agreement that’ll see the two companies working together to bring high-quality games to mobile phones.

The companies, which have already have a working relationship, will start their new partnership by optimising Gameloft’s 'SpiderMan Total Mayhem HD','Real Football 2011 HD', 'GT Racing: Motor Academy HD' and 'Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus' for Android-based devices.

New Acer mobile devices to arrive in the UK from next month

Acer - currently claiming the world no.2 spot for PC and notebook sales - has revealed new tablet devices and a new smartphone this week.

The Acer ICONIA SMART promises a 4.8-inch 1024x480 widescreen and an 8-megapixel camera. The device will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread on a Qualcomm 1GHz processor. UK availability is expected from May 2011.
