Just 1.1 million BlackBerry 10 smartphones were sold worldwide in the last quarter

The final quarter of BlackBerry’s financial year, which ended on 1st March 2014, saw the company selling around 3.4 million smartphones to end users.

However, it says over two-thirds of these ran on the older BlackBerry 7 platform, which means just 1.1 million were newer BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

Danish mobile company Lumigon produces a new Android smartphone

Danish mobile company Lumigon has extended its premium smartphone range with the T2 HD, a successor to the two-year-old T2.

The new handset has a stainless steel body, a toughened glass screen and is water resistant. It runs Android v4.4 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, supports 4G and is equipped with up to 128GB of memory.

Microsoft announces Office for iPad, plus free Office Mobile apps for iPhone and Android

Microsoft has announced a handful of new and updated mobile applications, including the long-awaited launch of ‘Microsoft Office for iPad’.

This comprises three separate iOS apps - Word, Excel and PowerPoint for iPad - now available in the Apple App Store, along with an update to the OneNote app. The basic apps are free for viewing and presenting files.

New TAG Heuer luxury phone has an invisible solar panel on its display screen

Premium watch brand TAG Heuer has announced a version of its ‘Meridiist’ luxury mobile phone with a transparent solar panel on its display screen.

The TAG Heuer MERIDIIST INFINITE handset is being produced by solar technology company Sunpartner Technologies and by Atelier Haute Communication, which also produces phones for Versace.

Mobile location-based services in Europe and North America are expected to generate over £4 billion in 2018

A new research report by Berg Insight predicts that revenue from mobile location-based services in Europe will grow from €735 million last year to €2.3 billion (£1.9 billion) in 2018, which is a compound annual growth rate of 25.8%.

Meanwhile, the North American mobile location-based service market is expected to grow at 16.1% per year from $1.8 billion in 2013 to reach $3.8 billion (£2.3 billion) in 2018.
