RIM and Sony Ericsson each reveal a new product within 24 hours. One has a 7-inch screen and a big announcement at the company's developer conference. The other, with a 1.3-inch micro-display, has a lower-key launch. Yet it's the similarities that have attracted my attention.

European Commission closes iPhone investigation after Apple policy changes

Earlier this year the European Commission launched two iPhone-related investigations into Apple's business practices. One looked at Apple’s insistence that repairs were only available in the country where an iPhone was bought, while the other concerned Apple's decision that developers could only use Apple’s own programming tools and approved languages when writing iPhone apps.

Microsoft launches Mobile Advertising SDK to put ads in Windows Phone 7 applications

Microsoft's advertising business has launched two new products today: a Mobile Advertising software development kit (SDK) for Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft Advertising Exchange for Mobile, which it's describing as "the industry’s first real-time, bidded ad exchange in mobile".

Motorola acquires location-based software company Aloqa

Motorola has acquired Aloqa, a company that develops location-based software. The myAloqa service uses a customer's location and contacts to tell them about places, events, bargains and other opportunities nearby. The company has recently passed one million downloads for its software application.

Vodafone Mobile Clicks announces mobile internet start-up finalists

The finalists of the Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2010 competition have been announced today. Vodafone Mobile Clicks, which ends with a final at the PICNIC Festival in the Netherlands on 24th September, aims to find the best mobile internet startup. Last year's winner was augmented reality browser Layar.
