Carphone Warehouse publishes quarterly results

The Carphone Warehouse has published its financial results for its fourth quarter of 2010, along with some figures for the full year and guidance for 2011.

It says its share of Best Buy Europe's net income to March 2010 was worth around £47 million, slightly more than had been predicted. In addition, its share of Best Buy Mobile US profit was around £46m, well ahead of initial guidance.

Electric cars will sell alongside mobile phones at Best Buy UK

Best Buy UK says its new consumer electronics stores will sell much more than mobile phones, multimedia equipment and domestic appliances. Its new shops will have a 'GreenTech' area that'll offer electric cars, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles alongside energy-saving products. The electric Tesla Roadster will be on show at the new Thurrock store, while the Citroën C1 ev'ie city car will be available in all Best Buy stores to test drive and order.

Best Buy's first UK store is set to open next week at 7am on Friday 30th April at Thurrock in Essex. Stores in Hedge End (Southampton), Merry Hill (West Midlands), Aintree and Croydon are also due to open this year.

UK sees 70% annual growth in smartphone ownership

Research company comScore has published smartphone uptake figures for Europe. It says the UK market grew by 70% in the last year to more than 11 million smartphone users. That splits into a 76% growth in smartphone users spending less than £35 a month; 60% growth in higher-priced monthly tariffs.

Italy has the largest number of smartphone subscribers overall - 15 million – but only saw 11% growth in the last 12 months.

In the five countries surveyed, Italy had the highest proportion of smartphone users – 32% – followed by Spain with 28.3%, the UK with 22.9%, Germany with 16.5% and finally France with 15.2%.

New CEO for Best Buy Europe

Best Buy Europe has appointed Scott Wheway as Chief Executive Officer. The company was created in May 2008 as a 50/50 joint venture between Best Buy Co. Inc. and The Carphone Warehouse plc. Roger Taylor, Carphone Warehouse’s finance director, had previously held the CEO role.

Mr Wheway will now be responsible for all Best Buy Europe operations, including The Carphone Warehouse’s 2,450 stores across Europe.
