Location-based search and advertising platform Poynt intends to file for bankruptcy

Poynt Corporation says it’s filed a Notice of Intention to File a Proposal under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (Canada). As a result, the company says it is now in a position to address its obligations to creditors in an orderly and efficient manner.

Calgary-based Poynt, which operates a location-based search and advertising platform, will now send a proposal to its creditors during the next 30 days. Its business will continue as usual during this process.

Google launches indoor maps for Android in the UK

Google has introduced indoor maps for a number of UK venues on its Android map application.

More than 40 venues in the UK are already available, including museums, shops, railway stations and airports. Building owners can upload their own floor plans for inclusion in future updates.

MEPs want European cars to phone for help... but there's still no legislation

The EU’s transport and internal market committees have adopted a report that says all new cars sold in the EU from 2015 should be able to dial the emergency services automatically when they are involved in a serious accident. This recommendation isn’t legally binding, although the European Commission is expected to announce proposed legislation later this year.

Vehicles with ‘eCall’ mobile technology would automatically call the Europe-wide emergency number 112 when a crash is detected.

Nokia cuts 10,000 staff, updates its strategy, changes the leadership team and sells Vertu

Nokia says it’s making changes aimed at ‘sharpening its strategy’ and returning to profit.

It’ll be investing in location-based services and making this an area in which Nokia products stand out. The company is cutting up to 10,000 staff, reducing the number of factories its runs, acquiring a new business, selling its Vertu luxury brand and changing its leadership team.

Cisco predicts mobile video will be the fastest-growing consumer mobile service

Cisco has published the results of its annual Visual Networking Index Forecast, which predicts and analyses worldwide Internet Protocol networking growth and trends for a five-year period.

It expects annual global IP traffic to reach 1.3 zettabytes (1.3 trillion gigabytes) by 2016, nearly four times the total in 2011. The number of network-connected devices is expected to reach 18.9 billion; almost 2.5 connections for each person on earth and approaching double the 2011 total of 10.3 billion devices.
