Ofcom has allowed UK mobile phone operators to put 3G mobile data services on the frequencies previously set aside for 2G communication. It says this has the potential to increase mobile broadband speeds, deliver improved in-building coverage and widen mobile broadband coverage in rural areas.

The 27th Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin has been shown a demonstration of intercepting and recording calls and text messages on a GSM mobile phone. Researchers Karsten Nohl and Sylvain Munaut sent a ‘ghost’ text message to a target phone that enabled a hacker to target the handset’s unique identification number.

Security researcher Karsten Nohl has released a software program called Airprobe that makes it much easier for people to test security (and potentially listen to calls) on their chosen mobile network. Airprobe enables users to record and then decode GSM mobile phone calls when used in conjunction with a computer, additional radio equipment and tables of data.
