Telefónica Digital and Mozilla have revealed plans to create a new mobile platform. It’s called the Open Web Device platform and will use HTML5 standards to deliver a smartphone-like device without premium pricing.
A Qualcomm chipset is currently being used for hardware development.

Two years after its formation at Mobile World Congress, the Wholesale Applications Community has launched the beta version of its in-application billing Network API.
The service, which enables customers to pay for digital goods via their mobile bill, is currently supported by AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, KT, LG U+, Telefonica Group, Telenor Group, Telekom Austria Group, SKT and SMART Communications.

Telefónica Digital has announced a global partnership with mobile commerce business Sybase 365.
It means Sybase 365 will help develop Telefónica’s mobile wallet, with the first Telefonica wallet services expected to launch commercially in Latin America and Europe during the first half of this year.

Telefónica says it’s signed a strategic partnership with cloud services company Joyent and is also making a strategic equity investment in the business.
It says Joyent’s technology expertise will help enhance cloud-based services for Telefonica’s new Digital unit.

Mark Evans has been announced as the new Chief Financial Officer of Telefonica UK, reporting to CEO Ronan Dunne. He takes over from acting CFO Adam Castleton.
Mr Evans had previously been at Vodafone for 10 years, before which he’d worked at Virgin Media.
