European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has used his 2013 ‘State of the Union’ speech today to announce plans to reduce phone charges, cut red tape and introduce new consumer rights.
The main parts of the ‘Connected Continent’ package include banning incoming mobile phone call charges while travelling in the EU from July 2014 and cutting the cost of international telephone calls within Europe.

The GSMA has been busy planning next year’s Mobile World Congress, which will be held from 24th until 27th February 2014 at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona.
It’ll have a theme of ‘Creating What’s Next’ and will highlight mobile innovations and advances in mobile.

Mercedes-Benz says it’ll soon be fitting its cars with smartphone and tablet charging panels that use the Qi wireless standard.
The announcement follows a recent decision by the Consumer Electronics for Automotive association (CE4A) to endorse Qi.

Apple has announced two new iPhone smartphones this evening.
The iPhone 5s is the company’s new flagship handset, described as the world’s first smartphone with 64-bit desktop-class architecture. As well as using Apple’s A7 chip it also has an improved 8 megapixel camera and a fingerprint sensor for unlocking.
