Customers are happy with mobile ads in return for free navigation

Map and location data provider NAVTEQ has published a survey about consumer reactions to mobile advertising within navigation.

Overall, 67% of consumers said they they were happy receiving promotional offers in exchange for free use of their favourite location-related content. Real-time traffic news was seen as the most valuable content for consumers, with 72% of respondents saying they'd use it on a weekly basis.

TomTom bringing local search to smartphones

Location and navigation company TomTom is putting its local search service on portable navigation devices, iPhones and Android smartphones from this summer.

TomTom Places combines the company's business listing and POI database with its maps, helping people to find the type of business they're looking for.

Garmin to acquire Navigon

Satellite navigation company Garmin has agreed to acquire navigation provider Navigon, which has its headquarters in Germany.

Navigon will operate as a subsidiary of Garmin Ltd.

CNN to use Nokia maps for its news network

24-hour news network CNN has announced a partnership with Nokia. It started when Nokia's 3D Maps were used by CNN for its recent coverage of the Royal Wedding and will see Nokia formally becoming one of the mapping services used by CNN.

The collaboration also involves a CNN App for Nokia, which provides access to online reports, streaming video and the CNN iReport community.

Yahoo! and Ovi, Nokia and Microsoft

With all the excitement about the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft, it's easy to forget another partnership between a major online brand and the Finnish mobile giant.

Exactly a year ago, Yahoo! and Nokia announced a worldwide strategic alliance that would see Nokia providing Yahoo!'s maps and navigation services under the Ovi brand, while Yahoo! would power Nokia's Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services. The two companies would also work on sharing log-in details across Yahoo! and Ovi services.
