Worldwide video call adoption to reach 29 million users by 2015

There'll be 29 million smartphone users making video calls by 2015, according to a report from Juniper Research. However, that still leaves at least 90% of smartphone users sticking exclusively to conventional calls.

Mobile usage compared: Europe vs Japan vs USA

Research company comScore has published a survey comparing mobile usage and behaviour in Japan, the United States and Europe. It found significant differences between the three regions, with almost twice as many Japanese mobile users using their mobiles to go online (browsing, accessing applications or downloading content) as European users.

UK mobile video viewing is up 75% on last year

Marketing intelligence company comScore says 2.7 million people in the UK now watch video on mobile devices, up 75% from July last year. Overall, in all five European countries measured - the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy – the total number of people watching video on mobile devices has increased by 66% in the past year to 12.1 million consumers.

New version of RealPlayer adds video transfer between mobile and PC

Digital entertainment company RealNetworks has announced a new version of its free RealPlayer video player. As well as letting consumers download and play photos, videos and music on their PCs, the new version allows them to copy files between their computer and their mobile device in either direction.

Mobile data usage was up 68% in the first half of 2010

Fixed and mobile broadband technology company Allot Communications says mobile data bandwidth usage increased by 68% during the first half of 2010. Video streaming consumed 35% of all mobile bandwidth, making it the largest-consuming application. Thanks in part to the continuing popularity of YouTube, it's also the single largest-growing application type, showing a 92% increase. YouTube alone accounted for 13% of mobile data bandwidth.
