Telefonica Europe 2010 results reveal high smartphone sales for O2 UK

Telefónica Europe, the parent company of O2 UK, has released its financial results for 2010.

It says annual revenue was up €15.255 billion, a 12.7% rise from 2009 (which represents organic growth of 4.4% year-on-year). The total European customer base reached 56.3 million, 14.3% higher than the previous year.<.p>

More mobile networks enabling carrier billing for applications and content

Orange customers in the UK will soon be able to pay for content purchased on their Window Phone devices by adding the charge to their mobile phone account. It means they won't need to give their bank information when opening a Microsoft account to buy music, games or apps.

The news comes a week after Research In Motion and Telefonica announced they were working together to introduce integrated carrier billing to BlackBerry App World.

Major mobile networks commit to NFC technology

A group of mobile network operators have committed to launching commercial Near Field Communications services in select markets by next year.

Although the technology is best known for enabling mobile payments, NFC can also be used for other services such as mobile ticketing, mobile couponing, information exchange and access to buildings or vehicles.

RIM and Telefonica plan in-app charging on O2 bills

Research In Motion and Telefonica have announced plans to introduce integrated carrier billing to BlackBerry App World. This will allow Telefonica customers around the world to purchase apps from BlackBerry App World and charge them to their monthly bill.

Customers will also be able to add in-app purchases of digital goods to their monthly bill.

O2 UK to pre-load phones with eBay application

Telefonica and eBay have launched a global deal that’ll see eBay's mobile application loaded onto most mobile devices sold via O2 UK.

It's the first mobile pre-load deal agreed by eBay anywhere in the world and is also the first time Telefónica has made an app available to smartphone and feature phone customers.
