UK Office of Fair Trading investigates free mobile apps and web games for children

The UK’s Office of Fair Trading has launched an investigation to find out whether some free web-based games and mobile applications for children are breaking the law.

It’s particularly concerned that games may include a ‘direct exhortation’ encouraging children to make a purchase or persuade their parents to buy advertised products for them, as this is illegal under consumer protection regulations.

Samsung launches new large-screen 'Mega' smartphone

Samsung Electronics has released a new ‘phablet’ device with a screen that’s larger than the forthcoming Galaxy S4 smartphone and the pen-equipped Galaxy Note 2.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is an Android-powered handset with a 6.3-inch screen, a 1.7GHz dual-core processor and an 8 megapixel camera.

Mobile devices with HTML5 browsers to increase 87% this year

There’ll be 1.4 billion mobile devices with HTML5-compatible web browsers at the end of this year, according to a new forecast from ABI Research.

That would represent an annual increase of 87%.

An introduction to Social WiFi

Hazel Allsopp of Purple WiFi writes:

Retail and hospitality businesses have long been aware of the need to offer free WiFi access to their customers. The use of smart phones is becoming increasingly widespread, and people expect to get online wherever they are, whatever they’re doing.

The latest large brand to recognise this is Intercontinental Hotels Group, who announced last month that they would be offering free access to 71 million loyalty scheme members’ worldwide. The decision was made in response to a survey in which 43% of guests said they wouldn’t stay in a hotel if it didn’t offer free WiFi.
