Intel results show a profit drop

Technology business Intel has announced its fourth quarter and full-year financial figures for 2012.

Revenue for the year was $53.3 billion (around £33.5 billion; down 1.2% from the previous year) and net income was $11.0 billion (down 15% year-on-year).

Shipments of large-screen 'phablets' expected to more than double this year

The ‘phablet’ - larger than a conventional smartphone but smaller than a tablet - is expected to prove very popular with manufacturers and retailers this year.

According to information and analytics provider IHS, worldwide shipments of these devices are expected to reach 60.4 million units this year, up 136% from the 2012 total of 25.6 million phablets.

Google invests in King's Cross site for new London HQ

Google UK has bought a 2.4 acre site at the new King’s Cross Central development to build its new headquarters building.

Work on the new Google HQ, which will be built above retail units, is expected to start towards the end of this year.

Smartphones expected to account for more than half of all mobile phones shipped next year

Figures from ABI Research suggest that smartphones will account for 50% of all handset shipments by 2014, increasing to more than two-thirds of all mobile phones by 2018.

However, this growth isn’t expected to result in Apple gaining any increased market share in the next few years: its iPhone family appears unlikely to gain any more than this year’s anticipated peak of 22%.

UK regulator tells parents to talk to children about mobile apps and charges

PhonepayPlus, the UK regulator of premium rate telephone services, says parents need to take control of their children’s smartphone bills and social media use - or face mobile phone bills that run into thousands of pounds.

The warning comes in a new report that highlights two areas of particular risk: free apps and social media linked to smartphones.
