A new report from the International Data Corporation says more smartphones were shipped in Q1 2013 than feature phones, which is the first time smartphone shipments have dominated.
Overall, it reckons the worldwide mobile phone market grew 4% year-on-year in the first three months of this year. IDC says manufacturers shipped 418.6 million mobile phones in the quarter, of which 51.6% were smartphones.

ZTE Corporation says its profits rose by 35.9% in the first quarter of this year, helped by the sale of some company assets.
Net income was up to 205 million yuan (£21 million), although quarterly sales were down 2.8% to 18.1 billion yuan (£1.9 million).

Microsoft says mobile phone manufacturer ZTE has agreed a licensing deal that provides coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for smartphones and tablets using the Android and Chrome operating systems
Last week Microsoft announced that Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Hon Hai had signed a similar license agreement covering Hon Hai and its Foxconn subsidiary.

The European Patent Office says 2012 was a record year, with more patent filings and grants than ever before.
Last year, the EPO received 257,744 patent filings from around the world: a 5.2% increase from the previous year.

ZTE has confirmed it’ll be producing a smartphone that uses Mozilla’s HTML5-based Firefox mobile operating system.
The new handset is called the ZTE Open and will launch on the Telefónica network in Spain, Venezuela and Colombia later this year.
