Two mobile industry veterans join the BlackBerry board

BlackBerry has appointed two of the mobile industry’s best-known names to its board of directors.

They’re Dick Lynch, former Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer of Verizon Communications, and Bert Nordberg, the former CEO of Sony Ericsson.

AT&T to buy $1.9 billion of mobile spectrum in the USA from Verizon Wireless

Communications business AT&T has agreed to spend $1.9 billion (£1.2 billion) to acquire some 700MHz mobile spectrum from Verizon Wireless.

It’s acquiring 39 licences that cover 42 million people in 18 states.

Facebook plans mobile operator billing for web apps

Facebook says it’s currently working with AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, T-Mobile USA, Verizon, Vodafone, KDDI and Softbank to introduce operator billing.

This would enable Facebook users to buy digital goods via a mobile web application and pay by charging the purchase to their mobile phone account.

More funding and London office for browser company Skyfire

Mobile web browser business Skyfire Labs has raised $8 million in its latest round of funding. Current investors Matrix Partners, Trinity Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners have been joined by Verizon Communications subsidiary Verizon Investments LLC.

Skyfire says it’ll use the funds to meet the demands of wireless operator customers and also to expand into Europe and Asia.

US mobile payment venture gets new supporters

Isis, the US-based mobile commerce venture announced last November by AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, has acquired a number of new supporters.

HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, RIM, Samsung Mobile and Sony Ericsson all say they’ll be introducing NFC-enabled mobile devices compatible with the Isis technology standards. In addition, Isis is working with DeviceFidelity to add NFC functionality to other mobile devices.
