European roaming laws don't affect mobile usage, says research

New EU roaming regulation isn’t having much effect on the mobile usage habits of British consumers when they’re abroad, according to new research conducted on behalf of mobile roaming company MACH.

Over half of mobile users said they were aware of the rules regarding roaming, yet three-quarters of these said the rules made no difference to how they used their mobile phone when travelling abroad.

Nokia Siemens Networks can move mobile traffic to WiFi without a break in service

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced a 'Smart WLAN Connectivity Solution' that allows mobile networks to offload their traffic to WiFi without any break in service.

It removes any need to manually switch between WiFi and cellular broadband on mobile devices, helping mobile operators maintain network capacity.

Shipments of consumer electronics devices with built-in mobile connections doubled last year

A new research report from Berg Insight says the number of consumer electronics devices with embedded cellular connectivity (excluding mobile phones) grew to 22 million in 2010.

That’s double the 11 million mobile-enabled devices shipped worldwide in the previous year.

Global mobile data traffic is expected to grow 26-fold in five years, warns Cisco

A new study from Cisco suggests that worldwide mobile data traffic will increase 26-fold between 2010 and 2015, reaching 6.3 exabytes per month by 2015.

This dramatic rise is being driven by an increase in mobile internet-enabled devices and a growing demand for video services.

Expect a billion broadband-enabled mobile connections by the end of 2011

Earlier this year Ericsson predicted we’d end 2011 with over a billion mobile broadband connections worldwide.

The latest market data from ABI Research agrees, with mobile broadband-enabled subscriptions expected to pass the billion mark within the next 11 months. That’s a fifth of all mobile connections around the world.
