Average 4G data tariff is 20% dearer than the 3G equivalent

International figures from ABI Research show that 4G data currently costs around 20% more than the equivalent 3G tariff.

However, the research company says there are signs that competition is already causing 4G tariffs to fall.

A fifth of all mobile phone sales will be 4G devices in 5 years

A new report from Pyramid Research expects worldwide 4G LTE handset sales to reach 490.5 million in 2017, which is a compound annual growth rate of 73% over this year’s predicted figures.

It means LTE handsets will account for 20.7% of all handset sales in five years’ time.

South Korea's KT creates plug-in laptop for mobile phones

South Korean telecom company KT has unveiled a mobile phone attachment called the Spider Laptop. Although it looks like a conventional laptop with an 11-inch screen and QWERTY keyboard, the accessory has no central processing unit or stand-alone operating system because it’s designed to extend the features of a smartphone.

The first version of the Spider Laptop was developed in partnership with Samsung and can connect to a Samsung Galaxy SIII with a single cable.

LG introduces a quad-core 4G smartphone

LG Electronics has formally announced the Optimus G, a new smartphone that’s the first 4G LTE device to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz quad-core processor.

The LG Optimus G has a 4.7-inch WXGA display, a 13-megapixel camera and a 2,100mAh battery. It runs Android v4.0 and is equipped with NFC connectivity

Sales bans and fines for Apple and Samsung in South Korea

A court in South Korea has ruled that Apple and Samsung have breached each other’s patents, ordering both companies to pay fines and remove some of their products from sale.

Apple must pay Samsung 40 million South Korean Won (around £22,250) while Samsung needs to pay Apple 25 million Won.
